Portia looked at Lucy and asked if she would like to help out with the school today

on

“I’ll need to think about that,” Lucy said. “I don’t know if anyone wants to do
that, especially after what happened last week.”

“The kids need our help, so we should go ahead and see what we need to do.”

Lucy smiled. “See you tomorrow morning, Lucy,” she called out.

Lucy ran around the kitchen to the other rooms, where their children were
sleeping. She kissed each of them with a promise of great things to come. Each
moment seemed to take forever as it seemed to take forever to get each child
to open their eyes and to turn on their side. Just before they fell asleep
Lucy whispered, “I love you.” Once the children were in their beds and quiet,
Lucy went upstairs to her bedroom and changed into pajamas. Then she went to
her office and got a large notebook and a marker. She sat on the sofa and
wrote the following words:

“We have to get busy. We have to get busy to get busy. We have to get busy
to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy.
We have to get busy. We have to get busy to get busy. We have to get busy. We
have to get busy to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy to
get busy. We have to get busy to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get
busy to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy to get busy. We
have to get busy to get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy to
get busy. We have to get busy. We have to get busy.”

At first Portia was not too excited over what Lucy had come up with. But then
she saw how excited Lucy was about it. It seemed like Lucy had a lot of ideas,
maybe even too many. “That’s great Lucy, but what if we can only do this for
a month. Or what if we don’t do any of it?”

“I don’t care,” said Lucy. “We need to be doing something. We need to get
started on whatever our goal is. We all want to help the world, don’t we? We
can get on with our lives and do what we have to.”

“Not me. I’m just a nice girl from a nice family who grew up in a very small
town. I want to travel. I want to be a writer. I want to be a photographer.
I want to be a scientist. There are so many possibilities we can do, we just
have to find it. That’s all I’m asking.”

Lucy nodded. “Good,” she said. “I’m going to get started on everything I
can think of.”

“The only trouble is that I have so much to think about.”

“That makes it easy. I like to get it all done so we can think about what we
have to do next.” Lucy added. “I’ll be right there. I just have to change my
shoes.”

Lucy was already dressed, so she just went to her office and changed shoes
and socks. She was a new person and a hard one to find. She found it with
the help of some cookies and beverages.

“I don’t think I’m going to get much work done today,” she said to herself.
“I’m going to see if I can have a quiet time.” Lucy called out. At first
nothing was heard. Finally a voice called out, “Hey Lucy, are you home?”

Lucy ran down the steps and saw her neighbour standing near the open
porch. “Yes, I’m home,” she said.

“I was looking for my sister’s house.” Portia said. Lucy could see the
sorrow in her friend’s eyes. “Lucy, your house caught on fire last night.
There was a young boy inside. Lucy, that was my little brother.”

Lucy was still standing in her pajamas, but she could imagine how
horrified Portia was. “My family would have been here,” she said. “Now,
Lucy, I don’t know what we can do about it. Can we do anything tonight?”

“Not right now,” Lucy told her. “But tomorrow morning I’ll see what we can
do.”

“Good,” said Portia. “I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you. Do you know
how to use a shovel?”

Lucy looked back over her shoulder as she started walking away. “No, I
don’t.”

Portia’s face was sad but also hopeful. She had a hope that Lucy would not
be able to help them after all. For now she went back to her house and tried
to sleep off the events of the past night.

Lucy did not work that night and spent time with her mother. They sat in
the living room and talked about all the things that had happened since they
got back home after their last trip. “I’m sorry,” Lucy said.

“I’m sorry too,” her mother said. “But we have to move on. I think I can’t
do this all by myself,” her mother said.

“I know,” Lucy said. “I’ll be back here again tomorrow”
