Private Luke and his friend Private Mike were standing in the entrance tunnel of their base when they were shot and killed

“Who the hell is shooting at us out there?” Luke could only groan as he sat up
and looked down the wall of the tunnel.

“It’s not me,” he whispered to his friend Private Mike who was standing
next to him.

“Looks like we’re the ones who are to blame,” Mike said and as he looked at his
friend’s chest to tell if it had been damaged from the shrapnel, he gasped,
“Jesus, he’s gone!”

“Hurt?” asked a friend, “Can you move?”

“No chance…I’ve gone all soft on you two,” Paul said in a very low voice as
he gently laid his friend’s body. Paul could feel his friend’s blood
oozing out from an open wound on the back of his neck. “I guess we’d better
go find out what is going on,” said Paul as he moved to his friend’s side to
attempt to wake him up.

“Paul! Help me!” he said suddenly, “I’m dying and I don’t know why!”

“Hang on, hang onto this,” Paul said and as he held his friend in his arms,
he said, “I’m right here, Mike, don’t worry about me, just hold on.”

“Paul, I’ve never been shot before,” Mike said, “I think my brains are about
to start falling out.”

“No, your heart is about to stop now,” Paul said, “You’ve got to hang on for
your life.”

“Paul, I’ve never felt so sad in my life,” Mike said. “Can you see it, Paul?
It’s like someone has taken my life away.”

“He’s right, Paul,” Michael said, “I haven’t felt this way since I have been
a soldier. I’m so confused. We should be dead, but I don’t feel anything. I’m
sure the others will too.”

“Michael!” shouted Paul, “You must come with me!”

Michael heard his friend’s voice and rushed to his side, grabbing him and
carrying him to the tunnel entrance. “No, Paul. You’re not going anywhere
alone. I’ll go with you, go see what’s going on.”

“Come on. Let’s go. I can see it coming.”

“No, Mike, it’s too dangerous,” Paul said, “There are too many soldiers
coming,”

“No! Come on, leave me here.”

“I can’t leave you here!”

“Mike, come on, we don’t have much chance of getting out of here.”

“You don’t know if he is alive or not. They could be coming for you too,
Paul!”

“We have to wait for Mike to get away before we try anything else.”

“Come on, Michael!”

“No, I’m not taking any chances, Paul.”

Paul looked at Mike and said, “I’ll take a look around too, try to contact
the others and maybe we can find out what is going on.”

“Michael, we don’t have much time!” Paul said as he looked around for a way
out of the tunnel.

“Paul, are you crazy? You can’t go out there alone! What if they had already
found the tunnel and you had come through first?”

“I can’t wait! It’s your decision,” Paul said, “Don’t worry.”

“Paul, I think we should go,” Michael said.

“No, don’t go.” Paul said, “Paul, please come with me. I can’t bear to sit
here all by myself. I think I’m going to faint.”

Mike looked at Paul and shook his head, “I’m sorry, Paul, I can’t,” he said,
“Not now.”

“Paul, I need you.”

“I don’t want to leave you.”

“Paul, I need you.”

Michael saw a way out and grabbed Paul by the arm. “Come on, you’ve got
to stay. Don’t go!”

“I’ll make it to the other side,” Paul said as he started for the exit,
“It’s not far away.”

“No, Paul, you have to go. I’ll be all right.”

“I’m going,” Paul said as he pulled Michael from the tunnel and they ran to
the opposite end so he could continue to call for help. “Michael, what are
you gonna do?” Paul asked as he turned around to the tunnel he had entered.

“I can’t go back down there with you,” Michael said, “You’ll go out that
way when it finally opens up, all right?”

“That’s right, stay here,” Paul said, “I’ll be right back.”

“Paul, no!” Mike said as he started running toward Paul, “He’s my friend!
He is! I’m not going to leave him.”

“Paul, please come back, Michael. I need you.”

“I’ll be right back,” Michael said as he ran as fast as he could toward the
tunnel exit. “Paul, I’m going to come back and get you!”

“No, Michael, get away from here!”

“Paul, please go back.”

“No, look at me!”

“I can’t do this,” said Paul as Michael grabbed Paul’s shirt and pulled
him down the tunnel.

“Come on, hurry! I can’t wait any longer!” Michael said as he held Paul’s
arm, “We have to get out of this.”

“Michael, we don’t have much time. Help me!”

“Paul… I’m too weak. I’ve got to go.”

“Michael, I’ve got to go! Please come back for me.”
